Fashion Front Runner

With less than a month to go until Cheltenham Racecourse opens its gates, the most fashion-conscious race goers will already have their perfect outfits hanging proudly in the wardrobe. Not everyone is that organised however and I’m guessing a few people will now be stressing over what to wear.

Dressing for National Hunt racing is a much more understated affair than it is for flat racing and the most important thing is to dress for the Great British weather. Although March is officially classed as spring, temperatures are still liable to plummet, chilly winds are never far away and heavy showers of rain are frequent. Resist the temptation to wear an out-of-season dress or a short sleeved shirt, just imagine how cold and miserable you’ll be? You want to be outside in the thick of the action; watching the horses in the paddock, spotting your favourite jockey preparing for their spin over the hurdles, enjoying the live build up and watching some top-class racing.

Ladies, think Zara Tindall meets Venetia Williams. A statement tweed coat, a cosy cashmere jumper, slim fit trousers, and a pair of comfortable but stylish boots equals Cheltenham chic. Add a touch of personality with accessories; a beautiful silk scarf will provide a splash of colour, a wool fedora will keep the wind at bay (and prolong your blow dry), luxury socks will keep your feet warm and complement your boots and a structured bag will pull your outfit together, but make sure it’s big enough to stash all your winnings!

Gents, stay quite traditional and opt for a tailored tweed jacket, smart trousers and a cashmere jumper over a shirt – layering is key to staying warm throughout a long day at the races. Brogues are widely favoured within the jumping fraternity and pairing with brightly coloured socks will put a modern twist on your ensemble. Add a splash of colour with a paisley patterned pocket square to complete your sophisticated race day look.

Cheltenham Festival is a unique experience and is now considered one of the blue riband sporting events in Great Britain, the horse racing equivalent to Wimbledon, the British Open and the FA Cup Final. If you’re lucky enough to be attending, enjoy your day, bet wisely and look fabulous!
